Sometimes, the most powerful driving lessons happen in real life—when we least expect them. What started as a routine lesson in North York, Toronto turned into a viral video viewed by millions and a moment that highlighted one of the most important rules in driving: maintaining a safe following distance.
What Happened?
During a regular driving lesson, my student and I stopped at a right-turn lane to yield for a pedestrian crossing. Everything was completely under control. We were following all traffic rules and driving responsibly.
Then, suddenly—a city bus behind us failed to stop in time and crashed into our vehicle.
The bus driver had not kept a safe following distance.
Important details:
- ✅ My student was not at fault
- ✅ We were fully compliant with all traffic rules
- ✅ The incident happened during a professional driving lesson and was recorded on camera
The Video That Reached Millions
The dashcam footage of the crash was shared on Instagram and quickly went viral. In less than two months, it reached over 10 million views, generating thousands of comments and shares from drivers, instructors, and safety advocates.
This video became a real-world example of why the “3-second rule” and safe driving habits are more than just test-day requirements—they’re lifesaving practices.
“It’s not just a test rule. It’s a rule that can save lives—especially when large vehicles are involved.”

What This Incident Teaches Us
1. Following Distance Is Not Optional
Whether you’re driving in the city or on the highway, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead gives you enough time to react.
Large vehicles like buses need even more space to come to a full stop.
2. Pedestrian Priority Comes First
Even if the light is green, if there’s a pedestrian crossing, you must stop. That’s exactly what we did—and what the driver behind us failed to anticipate.
3. Real Accidents Create Real Awareness
This wasn’t a simulation. It wasn’t a lesson in theory. It was a real crash, captured during an actual lesson. My student remained calm, and I was proud of their reaction. This situation taught millions of people something that no textbook could.
Final Thoughts
No matter how careful you are, other drivers’ mistakes can still affect you. That’s why safe habits like mirror checks, defensive driving, and especially maintaining a proper following distance are essential at all times.
Learning to drive isn’t just about passing the exam—it’s about staying alive, protecting others, and being prepared for the unexpected.
