The Process of Obtaining a Driver’s License in Canada

Obtaining a driver’s license in Canada generally follows a similar graduated system, although it varies by province. For example, in Ontario, the process consists of three stages: G1, G2, and full G license. Here are all the details you need to know about the process and exams for obtaining a driver’s license in Canada:

1. G1 License (Written Exam)

This first stage ensures that driver candidates have knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, and safe driving. The G1 written exam consists of multiple-choice questions and has two sections:

  • Traffic Rules: Questions about how to behave in traffic.
  • Road Signs: Questions about the meanings of road signs.

Exam Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You apply for the exam with a passport or identification document.
  • After passing the exam, you receive a G1 license, but you must drive under the supervision of an experienced driver.

2. G2 License (Driving Test)

After obtaining the G1 license, you need to drive for a certain period to develop practical driving skills. The G2 driving test evaluates the driver’s performance in real driving conditions. This test covers skills such as parking, lane changing, and safe driving.

Requirements:

  • You must have driven for 12 months with a G1 license. If you have taken driver education, this period is reduced to 8 months.
  • After passing the test, you receive a G2 license and can drive alone. However, the alcohol limit is 0%, and there may be passenger restrictions at certain times.

3. G License (Full License)

After the G2 license, you need to take the G test to obtain a full G license. This test assesses your advanced driving skills, focusing especially on highway driving.

Requirements:

  • You must have gained at least 12 months of experience with a G2 license.
  • After passing this test, you become a fully licensed driver without any restrictions.

Additional Information for Exam Preparation:

  • Ontario Driver’s Handbook: Exam questions come from this book, so you should study it thoroughly to prepare for the exam.
  • Practice Tests: You can familiarize yourself with the exam format by taking online practice tests for G1 and G2.
  • Demerit Points: If you violate traffic rules, demerit points are added to your license. If you accumulate 15 demerit points, your license may be suspended.
  • Insurance: After obtaining a license in Canada, it is mandatory to have insurance to drive a vehicle.

This process is specific to Ontario, but similar systems are applied in provinces like British Columbia, Quebec, and Alberta.
