Can I Drive with My Turkish License?

Yes, you can temporarily drive in Ontario with a Turkish driver’s license, but this is possible under certain conditions. Here is what you need to know:

Driving in Ontario with a Turkish License

Duration: You can drive in Ontario with a Turkish license for 90 days. This period starts from the date you enter Canada.

International Driving Permit (IDP): It is recommended to obtain an IDP along with your Turkish license. This document facilitates the recognition of your Turkish license in Canada. However, an IDP is not mandatory; you can drive with your Turkish license alone.

After 90 Days

Obtaining an Ontario License: After the 90-day period, you must obtain an Ontario driver’s license. This may require going through the G1, G2, and G stages. If your Turkish license is more than 2 years old, you may be eligible to apply directly for a G2 or G license.

License Translation: You must have an official translation of your Turkish license. This can be done through ATIO (Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario). Consulates may also provide translation services.

Things to Consider

Insurance: It is mandatory to have your vehicle insured while driving in Ontario. Insurance companies determine your premiums based on your driving history and current license.

Traffic Rules: It is crucial to comply with traffic rules. Accumulating demerit points can cause issues with your Ontario license application.

After the 90-day period, you must take the driving test and apply for an Ontario license.
