You moved from Turkey to Canada (Ontario) and want to get a driver’s license here. What steps should you follow for G1, G2, and G licenses? Should you get a G2 or directly a G license? Is it possible to get a G license directly? This week, I will answer these questions for you.
Step One: Get Your License Translated
To get your license translated, you can make an appointment through the consulate website or use the services of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO). Do not use translations done in Turkey. If you are getting your translation done through an ATIO member, don’t forget to also get your driving history from e-Devlet translated. You can find the list and contact information of ATIO members here.
Note: If you have at least 2 years of driving experience from Turkey, you can take the G Full license exam directly. If you have less than 2 years of experience, you will need to complete this period to 2 years.
Step Two: Take the G1 Written Exam
You can take the G1 exam with a passport, student document, residence permit, work permit, asylum document, or any document showing your immigration status. You do not need a translation of your Turkish license for the G1 exam. However, you will need your license translation for the G exam. If you go without translations, you can still get the G1 license, but you will need to submit your translations later for the G exam.
During the exam, you will undergo an eye exam and have your photo taken. Don’t forget your glasses or lenses!
Exam Fees:
- For the G1 Exam: $106 + $91.25 (for the G exam, with translations)
- For the G1 Exam: $106 + $53.75 (for the G2 exam, without translations)
If you go to the exam center without translations, you will need to pay an additional $91.25 for the G exam and can get a refund of $53.75 after passing the exam.
