G2 and G Road Test Evaluation Criteria in Ontario, Canada

Planning to take your G2 or G road test in Ontario? Understanding how the examiner evaluates your performance is one of the best ways to prepare. These road tests are designed to assess whether you’re ready to drive safely and independently on city streets and highways.

Below is a clear breakdown of what driving examiners look for during the G2 and G tests.

Test Start: Smooth and Safe Entry into Traffic

  • Use signal, mirror checks, and shoulder checks before moving
  • Enter the road from a parking spot at the right speed, based on traffic flow
  • Ensure the road is clear before merging into traffic

General Driving: Control and Awareness

  • Follow the posted speed limits
  • Keep your car centered in your lane
  • Check mirrors every 5 to 10 seconds
  • Maintain smooth and steady control of the vehicle

Intersections and Turns

  • Make full left-right visual checks at every intersection
  • At traffic lights, stop smoothly and prepare for safe turns
  • When turning left or right, ensure you’re in the correct lane and use proper timing and signaling
  • Yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic where necessary

Stopping and Following Distance

  • Come to a full stop at stop signs and hold for at least 3 seconds
  • In traffic, leave at least one car length between you and the vehicle ahead
  • Maintain a three-second following distance while moving—especially on highways

Yield Signs and Right-of-Way

  • At yield signs (triangle shape), check for traffic on the main road
  • If cars are coming, stop and give way
  • If the road is clear, make a controlled and safe entry

Parking and Maneuvers (G2 Test)

  • Perform all parking maneuvers (parallel, hill, or reverse) with the right signals and mirror checks
  • Use proper shoulder checks and observe surroundings before and after each move
  • Maintain control and accuracy throughout each maneuver

Highway Driving (G Test Only)

  • Merge onto the highway at 100–110 km/h, if traffic allows
  • If traffic is dense, adjust to the flow safely before merging
  • Maintain a consistent highway speed and follow lane discipline
  • Signal and check blind spots before lane changes or exits

Examiner’s Evaluation System

All these actions are scored in real-time during your road test. Mistakes like failing to check mirrors, speeding, poor lane control, or ignoring signage may result in points lost—or in serious cases, immediate failure.

Remember:
✔️ A small mistake won’t always fail you—unless it puts safety at risk.
✔️ The goal is to prove that you are a safe, alert, and responsible driver.

These evaluation points are not just for passing the test—they are real-world driving skills that keep you and others safe on the road. Whether you’re preparing for your G2 or G exam, practice these habits until they become second nature.
