The G1 road test is a major milestone for new drivers in Ontario. However, what should have been a routine test day turned into a cautionary tale—one that highlights the risks of being accompanied by an unlicensed driving instructor.
What Happened?
During the summer of 2023, I was accompanying one of my students to their G1 road test. We were waiting in the car, ready to begin, with the official examiner already seated in the vehicle. Just as we were about to start the test, another driver attempted to park next to us and, despite multiple verbal warnings, crashed directly into our vehicle, damaging the rear bumper.
After speaking with the other driver, we discovered:
- They only held a G1 license
- They were accompanied by an individual posing as a driving instructor, without a valid teaching license
How We Handled It
I explained to the other party that they were clearly at fault and offered them two options:
- Pay for the damage out of pocket so we could avoid an insurance claim
- Proceed with formal insurance reporting
They initially chose to go through their insurance. I filed all necessary documents and began the official claims process. However, later that evening, they realized:
- Their insurance deductible would start at $1,000
- The G1 driver and the unlicensed instructor could face higher premiums and difficulty obtaining future insurance
They contacted me, offering to pay out-of-pocket and even provide additional compensation. Unfortunately, since the claim had already been submitted, it was too late to reverse the process.
Key Takeaways from This Incident
1. Accidents Stay on Your Record – Even If It’s Not Your Fault
In Ontario, any reported accident becomes part of your driving history. It can affect future license renewals, insurance rates, and even job applications that involve driving.
2. Insurance Claims Are Expensive
Minor accidents can still result in high repair costs and significantly increased monthly premiums. Always think twice before involving insurance when alternative solutions are available.
3. You Must Be Accompanied by a Licensed Instructor
It is illegal to attend a driving test with someone who is not a certified driving instructor. Instructors must be licensed by the province. A fake or unlicensed coach can:
- Void your test
- Put your safety at risk
- Cause legal and insurance complications
4. Stay Alert, Even When Parked
This accident happened before the test even began—a reminder that anything can happen on the road, even when you’re stationary. Always be aware of your surroundings.
Final Thoughts
Driving is not just about passing a test—it’s about responsibility. Who you train with matters. Make sure you are learning from a licensed, insured, and experienced driving instructor. Don’t risk your future for short-term convenience.
