Other Major Traffic Violations and Fines

  • Running a red light: $325 fine and 3 demerit points.
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: $240 fine and 2 demerit points.
  • Disobeying traffic signs: Fines typically range from $85 to $500 and result in 2-3 demerit points.
  • Driving under the influence (DUI): Considered a criminal offense, resulting in 7 demerit points, heavy fines, license suspension, and possible imprisonment (CompleteCar, ThinkInsure).

Fines in Special Zones

  • Construction zones and school areas: Higher fines for speeding. If workers are present in construction zones, the fine can be $12 per kilometer (Ontario Courts).

Demerit Points

Demerit points can lead to the suspension or cancellation of your driver’s license. You receive a warning at 9 points, and your license is suspended at 15 points.

These fines being recorded on your driving record can also increase your insurance premiums. Following traffic rules and being cautious is the best way to avoid these penalties.
